CHARACTER
Character Name: Ravus Nox Fleuret
Character Age: 28
Canon: Final Fantasy XV
Canon Point: Chapter 13, post-death
History: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ravus_Nox_Fleuret
Personality: A former prince to a fallen kingdom, and now the High Commander of the army that conquered it, Lord Ravus Nox Fleuret is a man of contradictions. He has both at once a regal, imposing air of authority, and the deferential air of one who has spent much of his life in servitude. He is calm and cold, not one to display his thoughts and feelings openly, yet he has a deep-seated anger just below the surface. For all intents and purposes, he appears a power hungry, self-serving antagonist who sold out in joining the empire that killed his mother and captured his kingdom, yet the reality is much more complex.
As a sixteen-year-old, Ravus had a peaceful, happy upbringing, until tragedy struck his kingdom. During the invasion of the Fenestala Manor by Niflheim forces, Queen Sylva, Ravus' mother, gave her life to protect her son, and seeing her killed before his eyes was something that would deeply affect him for the rest of his life. Instead of trying to flee, he stayed with her body and begged for help from King Regis, who had been visiting with his son from the allied Kingdom of Lucis. However, Regis simply took his son and fled. Regis -- in Ravus's view -- drew his mother's killers into Tenebrae in the first place, and then abandoned him and his kingdom to their fate. That feeling of betrayal festered into a deep hatred of King Regis, and by extension, his son Prince Noctis as well. Ravus changed over twelve long years, and Lunafreya would later come to describe her brother as bound by the past, and obsessed with power. Ravus' hatred intensified to the point he rejected the prophecy that asserted Noctis would be the Chosen King, thinking him unworthy, and instead, Ravus believed his Oracle blood could make him the rightful King of Light. This fuelled him to assist in the capture of the Crown City in order to claim the Ring of the Lucii.
"I lost my mother, my country, my birthright. Niflheim was the only life left to me. But all of that was for this. The ring belongs to me now."
It was at that point Ravus was rejected by the kings of old, and for his hubris, his arm was burned severely. Later, it was amputated and replaced with a magitek prosthetic. Beyond this point we see the personality Ravus displays beyond Kingsglaive and in Final Fantasy XV proper: less hooked on claiming power and gaining revenge, more bitter and resigned to fate. Again, outwardly, he appears to be working closely alongside Chancellor Ardyn to capture Lunafreya and stop Noctis by killing the Astrals, even being promoted to High Commander to that end. When he meets Noctis, he taunts him and his party and belittles him for being unworthy. If not for Ardyn's intervention he would have tried kill him, stating that if he fell, that, too, would be fate.
As with Ardyn, he plays the role of an imperial loyalist, yet in reality, Ravus's actions are a ruse. He has largely given up on his own ambition, and instead is fuelled by nothing more than a deep devotion to his sister, Lunafreya. Although before the invasion of Insomnia he is shown as being cruel to her, treating her roughly and locking her up when she attempts to sneak away to Lucis, it was ultimately to protect her, and his attempt to use the Ring's power was ultimately for her sake more than revenge. Underneath his grief and rage is a sensitive, caring older brother, who only wants what is best for her but disagrees with where she places her loyalties, which causes conflict in their relationship. Though he can come across as stubborn in his rejection of Noctis to the point of being overbearing, even accusing Lunafreya of throwing her life away, he eventually comes to respect his sister's indomitable will in aiding the Chosen King, and begins to assist her on her quest instead of hindering it.
He risks everything to shield Lunafreya from the Empire, acting as a double agent in his position as High Commander by concealing her movements, first seeing to it that she was escorted safely back to the manor with Gentiana during her task, despite clear orders to capture her and take the Ring to the Emperor. When it becomes clear she is dying from the covenants she forges with the gods, Ravus meets her in secret to comfort her and lends his unconditional support, giving her a final push when she is ready to give up on her quest. Most of all, he encourages his sister to do what she thinks is right, not only because of her role as Oracle, but out of her own will. Yet at no point does Ravus show any real belief in the prophecy itself until the very end, finding no hope in it due to all the suffering it has brought to him and his family. Rather than supporting her as the Oracle, he only wants to help share her burdens as an older brother, putting aside his hatred for Noctis in favour of supporting her, and even joining forces with Ignis -- albeit briefly -- in their mutual goals of wishing to protect those they love.
"To deliver the ring and inspire the king is your calling. You mustn't fall."
"But... I lack the strength to go on."
"Find it, Lunafreya. You have the will. Go to Noctis. Show him the truth of your heart."
Even as a public figure, there is a sense that he is perceived as a man divided. Ravus is despised by Lucians as a lapdog of the empire, but in general he seems to be well-liked elsewhere, such as in the Accordo protectorate. In Altissia, ambient dialogue shows sympathy for the struggles he must have gone through as an unwilling servant of the Empire, such as when he is spotted standing outside the church where Lunafreya and Noctis were to be wed, described as simply looking on in sadness; there is also speculation on how keeping secrets of the Empire's plans from his sister "must have torn him up inside". Likewise, the people of Tenebrae speak highly of him, such as Maria, a personal retainer of House Fleuret, showing he treated his servants well and confided in them of his true plans.
Despite his dedication to his people, and his cunning in playing Niflheim to his own ends, he still has not moved beyond his self-destructive tendencies. He's still prone to lashing out in impulsive, irrational ways when fuelled by grief, which leads to the downfall of both himself and his kingdom. When Lunafreya sacrifices her life, Ravus flies into a rage and attempts to kill Noctis, which would have rendered her sacrifice pointless. When that doesn't work, he retaliates against the Empire, and as a consequence Fenestala Manor and the surrounding lands are destroyed by daemonic forces. His show of defiance against the Emperor and finally his swearing of allegiance to Noctis, in Gralea, ultimately has him attacked by demons and is soon disposed of by Ardyn. Ravus's recklessness, pride and the fact he has always fought alone are ultimately things that prove his downfall.
"Kill me... End it."
When his corpse is revived as a daemon to fight Noctis and his group, he again shows he no longer wishes harm on Noctis. Before the battle he retains enough of his humanity to beg for Noctis to kill him, and throughout the battle he is actively shown struggling against his condition, cursing Ardyn for his torment. After his defeat, the party regret he met such a twisted end, Gladiolus stating he deserved better, and was "a man with hopes and dreams". In a different situation, he might have been an ally in the fight against the darkness and an inheritor of his sister's cause, but circumstances twisted him, quite literally, into becoming a monster.
Inventory: Alba Leonis, his sword.
Abilities: Ravus fights with a cutlass-style sword, and uses a style that relies on precise, fast and powerful strokes of his blade. He has an affinity for lightning which he can use through his magitek prosthetic, creating purple electricity he can use to spellbind his blade for additional damage, create a beam of thunder from his hand, or which can be used as a rapid dashing attack. Another of his abilities is Last Rites, where he leaps at the enemy, electrifying the ground in a small radius around him to inflict shock and to damage over time.
He has supernaturally fast strength and agility (whether through magitek or his Oracle lineage, or a combination of both; characters speculate on this but the game never answers this conclusively) so much as that he was able to strangle Noctis with ease and overpower Gladiolus, easily the heaviest, tallest and strongest member of the party, blade-to-blade, before throwing him into a car. Yet this immense strength comes at a price: it was through his magitek prosthetic that Ardyn was able to corrupt Ravus and transform him into a daemon.
Finally, as the High Commander of Niflheim's imperial army, it can be inferred Ravus has many years of experience in warfare, and is skilled in military strategy and leadership. He's skilled in dismantling magitek weaponry such as giant mechs during combat, and is not above employing stealth to avoid difficult conflicts and sneak around undetected.
Flaws: In many ways, Ravus is the opposite of Noctis, because despite going through many of the same hardships, he has had little to no companionship or support network throughout, and so has reacted to many of his problems by becoming angry, violent and retaliatory. He's impulsive and irrational when fuelled by strong emotions, holds a grudge like no tomorrow, self-destructive, rude, and blunt. He threw his lot in with his nation's invaders in the name of both revenge and survival, becoming complicit in their many war crimes such as the invasion of Insomnia. He also apparently has no problem trying to murder the object of his revenge in cold blood while said person is unconscious, or stabbing allies in the back. Literally.
